Meet Whitney, one of our most dedicated and hard-working volunteers. She devotes much of her week to caring for a group of confiscated dogs at the shelter who are there for an extremely extended stay while they await the outcome of a court case. Whitney’s dedication to these wonderful dogs is nothing short of inspiring, so read on!
I started with PB SOC one year ago last month. I answered a plea on Facebook from 4 R Friends Rescue seeking help with a group of special dogs at Sac County Animal Care, which led me to Delyse and PB SOC. I have been exclusively handling the confiscate dogs for the past year and am the lead for them on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. I have become enormously attached to each one of the dogs in this very special and deserving group. I try to keep them mentally as well as physically stimulated while showing them as much love and personal attention as possible. They all have such different personalities and needs, and I love them like they’re my own. I truly feel like I have twenty dogs in my family: six at home and fourteen at the shelter.
I have learned the meaning of strength and resilience from these animals who have known nothing but suffering and pain, yet greet me every day with joy and wiggly butts! This is something that cannot be taught. You have to experience it to fully grasp the feeling that rushes through you when you look into their eyes. That’s what volunteering has done for me, and I would highly recommend experiencing it for yourself. The satisfaction that you have made a life better just by being there, by showing up, is invaluable.
Whitney, we can’t thank you enough for your devotion to this group of dogs. You’re a truly wonderful person and a priceless volunteer!
